Old Testament Survey provides an overview of the message of the Old Testament, both at the level of individual books and within the larger canon of Scripture. Students will not only grasp the main theme of each book but also see how each contributes to the Bible’s overarching message (big picture). In this second part of the survey, we will continue tracing the flow of redemptive history through Israel’s monarchy and the wisdom writings (1 Samuel-Song of Solomon).
The Goals
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Understand how the rise, reign, and failure of Israel’s kings fit within the unfolding storyline of redemptive history
Explain the central message of each book from 1 Samuel through Song of Solomon and how each contributes to the overarching message of Scripture.
Recognize how Israel’s kingship, worship, wisdom, and covenant life point to, anticipate, and are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Deepen their worship of God by treasuring Him above all else in heart and life.
The Commitment
This class is open to anyone junior high age and older. Students may participate at different levels of commitment depending on their ability and interest:
Sundays Only – Attend class each week and participate in the lecture and discussion.
Sundays + Reading – In addition to class, read through each book of the Bible as we study it week by week.
Sundays + Reading + Writing – Along with attendance and reading, complete a brief (1–2 page) paper for each book, responding to a synopsis question provided in advance.
