The Mission of the Kingdom

2 Min Read

This coming Sunday, we have the privilege to gather together to worship Jesus, our Lord. I am excited to return to the Gospel of Matthew with a new sermon series, The Mission of the Kingdom (Matthew 10-12).

In chapters 1-9, Matthew has carefully presented Jesus as the Christ. His kingly lineage (1), His divine conception (1), His virgin birth (1-2), His water baptism (3), His fierce temptation (4), His authoritative words (5-7), and His miraculous works (8-9) all testify, with undeniable certainty, that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, the very King of Israel. In Chapters 3 through 9, Jesus has been preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom (4:23; 9:25), calling sinners to Himself through repentance and faith.

As the next scene unfolds, Jesus summons The Twelve, charges them, and sends them out on a mission to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (10). His message to them, though, is very sobering: you will be hated by all because of Me (10:22). In chapters 11 and 12, the Spirit reveals Israel’s unbelief and rejection of their Messiah, which ultimately leads to His crucifixion. However, the mission of God does not fail. His purposes are being fulfilled (Acts 2:23;13:46-47). And despite strong opposition and rejection, Christ continues to appeal to sinners to come to Him and find rest for their souls (11:28-30).

Join us for the coming months as we unpack these verses and make much of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
